Charlotte Med Weight

What to expect at a medical weight loss consult

Every clinic works a little differently. This is a general guide.

Before you go

The visit, step by step

  1. Health history. You will answer questions about your medical history, family history, eating patterns, sleep, and activity.
  2. Measurements. Expect weight, height, blood pressure, and sometimes body composition.
  3. Lab work. Many clinics order blood tests, such as blood sugar, cholesterol, thyroid, and kidney function. This may happen the same day or at a separate visit.
  4. Treatment discussion. The clinician explains options, which may include medication, nutrition support, and lifestyle changes. A good clinician reviews benefits, risks, and costs, and tells you if a medication is not right for you.
  5. Your plan. You leave knowing what to take, when to start, how doses change, and when you will be seen again.

Follow-up

Expect check-ins every few weeks at first, in person or by telehealth, to adjust doses, manage side effects, and track progress. Ask how to reach the clinic between visits.
